You've heard the word 'trillion' thrown around — national debts, tech company valuations, Elon Musk's net worth. But what does $1,000,000,000,000 actually look like? Let's break it down.
The Basic Math
One trillion is a thousand billions, or a million millions. Written out: 1,000,000,000,000. That's 12 zeros. If you counted one number per second, non-stop, it would take you about 31,700 years to count to a trillion.
Stacked in Cash
A standard US $100 bill is 0.0043 inches thick. If you stacked $1 trillion in $100 bills, the stack would be about 43,000 inches tall — roughly 679 miles. That's higher than the International Space Station's orbit (254 miles) and the Hubble Space Telescope (340 miles) combined. Twice.
If you used $1 bills instead, the stack would reach 67,866 miles high — about a quarter of the way to the Moon.
